Update on the New MyBO Activity Tracker

Last week we rolled out the new Activity Tracker on My.BarackObama.com to make it easier for our online supporters to measure their impact on the campaign. Since then, we’ve been listening to your feedback and have made a number of important changes and upgrades.

We wanted to take this opportunity to talk a little bit more about how the Activity Tracker differs from the previous points system. We also wanted to highlight some of the changes made in response to the feedback we’ve received from our supporters.

One of the most important differences between the Activity Tracker and the previous points system is that MyBO users are no longer ranked against one another. Unlike the old system, your actions – and your actions alone – now determine your activity level score. You will no longer constantly shift in rank based on other users’ actions.

In addition, the new tracker displays a record of all your past activity using our online tools, but calculates your activity level based only on recent actions. Compared to the old cumulative points system, the new Activity Tracker more accurately reflects current engagement in the campaign.

Finally, the new Activity Tracker does a better job of measuring direct, offline involvement in the campaign. Points are no longer awarded for just signing into MyBO, but you do get a public, transparent record of your activity. The Activity Tracker assigns you an activity level anywhere from 1 to 10 based on the various actions you’ve taken. You need 10 points to go up one activity level. Here’s the breakdown of points assigned to certain actions:

• 15 points for every event hosted

• 15 points for every donation made to your personal fundraising page

• 3 points for every event attended

• 5 points for every call made using our online call tool

• 10 points for every door knocked using our online canvassing tool

• 3 points for every blog post

• 3 points for every group joined

In addition, here are some changes we’ve made in response to your feedback:

• Initially users were not receiving credit for calls they had previously made using our online tool. We always had intended to backfill that information. Now we have.

• We’ve fixed a display issue with Firefox 2 that was causing the Activity Tracker to display improperly on some computers.

• Lastly, we’ve made some slight adjustments to the group activity tracker to better account for groups with lots of members.

As always, we appreciate your patience and we welcome your feedback.

The Big Night

Last night, National Field Director Jon Carson sent out the following email, announcing a nationwide grassroots organizational effort in conjunction with the final night of the 2008 Democratic National Convention...

In less than two weeks, Barack will accept the nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

It will be the biggest night of the campaign so far, and you can share the moment with millions of fellow supporters across the country.

Sign up to attend a Convention Watch Party in your neighborhood on Thursday, August 28th:

At the 2004 convention, Barack spoke about coming together to participate in the politics of hope.

People like you heard that message and now you are making it happen all across the country. Just yesterday we made a remarkable achievement -- 2,000,000 donors owning a piece of this campaign.

At Convention Watch Parties, you can celebrate the commitment and hard work it took to get here. And you can help plan voter registration drives that are being organized in all 50 states on the weekend of August 30th through September 1st.

You've been doing an amazing job of opening up the political process and bringing in as many people as possible.

And there's no better way to reach out to your friends and family than to invite them to be a part of this historic moment.

I hope you'll take this opportunity to continue growing our movement in your community and watch as we make history together.

Thank you for everything you are doing,

Jon

Jon Carson
National Field Director
Obama for America

Faith in Politics Forum, Sat., Aug. 16th,
6:30pm-9:30pm, Greater Mt Zion (E. Austin)

I predict Barack will floor McCain at the polls following Saturday's "Faith and Politics" Forum.

I highly recommend y'all go to our get-together in East Austin!

When:  Sat., Aug. 16th, 6:30pm-9:30pm

Where:  Greater Mt Zion Baptist Church, 1809 Pennsylvania, Austin, TX

Barack will do great because the format is they'll ask Barck questions and he'll answer without Old Man McCain hearing the answers, then the samne w/ McCain...This is not a debate. But McCain is gonna get crushed.

My prediction, Barack's poll#'s will go up by 7% after this forum!  Any predictions??

Best,
David Kobierowski

Republicans For Obama

“For the first time in a long time, we have the chance to build a new majority of not just Democrats, but Independents and Republicans who've lost faith in their Washington leaders but want to believe again – who desperately want something new.” – Barack Obama

Earlier today the Obama campaign launched the official Republicans for Obama homepage. This site will serve as a place for Republicans to communicate with one another and organize methods of educating fellow Republicans about Barack’s plans to move this country forward by bringing together all Americans, regardless of party affiliation.

Democrats aren't the only ones who want a new direction for America. In the past eight years, Washington Republicans have abandoned their commitments to fiscal discipline, effective government, and responsible foreign policy. Republicans across the country are just as eager as Democrats and Independents to see the country move in a new direction.

In addition to connecting with other Republican and former Republican Obama supporters, you can learn more about where Barack stands on issues like the economy, trade, foreign policy, and Iraq. You can also read about the key policy differences between Barack and John McCain

Obama has a strong record of bringing people together from the left and the right to solve problems, leading with superior judgment on foreign policy issues and demonstrating fiscal responsibility. In the Illinois Senate, he worked with Republicans on death penalty reform, ethics reform, passing a new tax credit for working families, and expanding health care for kids. In the U.S. Senate, he worked with Republicans to make sure our veterans get the care they deserve and to increase our investment in alternative energy.

In coordination with the unveiling of the Republicans for Obama webpage, several prominent Republicans announced their support of Barack ealier in the week, including former Iowa Republican Congressman Jim Leach, former Rhode Island Republican Senator Lincoln Chaffee, and prominent lawyer and former White House intelligence advisor Rita E. Hauser.

Congressman Leach offered his reasons for supporting Barack:

This is not a time for politics as usual. The portfolio of issues passed on to the next president is as daunting as any since WWII. The case for inspiring new political leadership and the social ethic has seldom been more evident. Barack Obama's platform is a call for change, but the change that he is articulating is more renewal than departure. ... It is rooted in very old American values that are very much part of the Republican as well as the Democratic tradition.

... The national interest requires a new approach to our interaction with the world -- including the recognition that a long-term occupation of Iraq is likely dangerously destabilizing.

Visit the new Republicans for Obama page to join the community today.

Quote of the Day: Hood Ornament

Too true:

[John McCain] no longer stands for anything. He has transformed himself from a maverick into a cipher, a hood ornament on a hit-and-run machine. He has no more political content now than the constantly changing cast of cynical right-wingers aboard his campaign plane.

Obama Campaign Releases New Video Fact-Check on
McCain Tax Lies

The Obama campaign released the following fact-check video to correct the record on Senator McCain's latest attack ad, "Taxman." This latest McCain attack ad continues what an independent, nonpartisan fact checkers have found to be a "pattern of deceit" from Senator McCain's campaign about Senator Obama's record on taxes.

In the video, our Deputy Director of Economic Policy, Brian Deese, walks viewers through the ad's laundry list of lies, and provides the truth about Barack Obama's plan to give Americans a $1,000 energy rebate and to provide middle class families with 3 times the tax relief as they would see under the McCain plan.

Voices for Change: Patricia in Kentucky

Born and raised in Newport, Kentucky (where she still lives today), Patricia, 64, first registered to vote when she was eighteen. She was inspired by the words of John F. Kennedy and rushed to register to vote so she could place a vote for him in the 1960 election. “His words inspired me to vote, and I’ve been voting ever since,” she said.

Forty-eight years later, Patricia’s 18-year-old granddaughter felt the same way about Barack Obama.

Patricia raised her granddaughter Janeesha from the time Janeesha was 3-years-old and recently took her to register to vote.

It’s something special about Obama. I was 18, and now she is 18.  There was Kennedy, and now there’s Obama! There’s a special connection for us.

Patricia explains what inspires her about Obama:

He’s got that "go get ‘em,” He does! He is determined to make this work and make this world a better place. I started reading about him and hearing things about him long ago. He’s got what it takes. He’s got that charisma that says, "Come on, you’re going to help me!" I talk about him to everybody.

The issues most important to Patricia right now are gas prices and the price of food. “I’m not a particularly thrifty person, but they’ve got me watching pennies right now,” she says.

She’s also concerned about the environment. She says:

I buy bottled water, and I noticed one day that I had all these bottles in my trash cans. And I thought – where do all these bottles go? The answer is into the earth. So I’m thinking I will stop drinking bottled water.

A mother of four – including one son who has had a 23-year Navy career – Patricia has always made time for her community. Even while working full time, she belongs to Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary and currently spends her free time teaching a local woman learn to read.

But now she’s taking some extra time to volunteer for Obama too. She and Janeesha hope to put in some time together to get Obama elected.

Obama inspires me – just like Kennedy did. And that tickles me.

Join Patricia and our millions of volunteers across the country and learn what you can do to get more involved in the campaign.

Voices for Change is a series featuring profiles of Barack Obama's grassroots supporters from across the nation. The people who make up this movement come from all different backgrounds, but they share a common goal of helping bring about fundamental change in Washington.
