"Barack will ensure that all Americans will have
an equal opportunity to achieve the American Dream"

Since he began public service many years ago in Chicago, disabled Americans have found Senator Obama a champion of disability rights. Barack works hard to create a country of equal opportunities for all Americans – whatever their abilities.

He has a plan to ensure educational opportunities for disabled Americans, to end discrimination and promote workplace equality, and to help disabled Americans live independent lives.

Barack was recently a co-sponsor of the Americans with Disabilities Reform Act. In sponsoring the act, Barack said:

With nearly 54 million Americans living with disabilities today, we have a responsibility to ensure they have better access, more opportunities, and increased independence.

Enacting the Americans with Disabilities Act was a historic milestone when it was signed into law eighteen years ago, but we still have more to do.  We must reaffirm our nation’s commitment to those with disabilities by immediately passing legislation to reverse judicial decisions that permit discrimination against persons with disabilities.

Disabled Americans recognize Barack’s commitment to equality and disability rights and have been quick to show their support of his campaign. Here are a few of their stories:

Sue in Bethesda, Maryland says:

I have been working to improve policies and supports for Americans with Disabilities since my son, Charlie, was first identified as having complex and multiple disabilities 25 years ago.  I support Barack Obama for President because he calls on all of us to engage to make our country better.  We have so much to do to bring everyone into the mainstream of American communities -- some of it is policy work, some of it is politics -- and some is the kind of everyday work each of us does in our families and in our communities to help our nation get better.

Alana from Chicago, Illinois says:

I especially encourage Americans with disabilities and those who are concerned with disability issues to support Barack Obama. I am excited to work for his campaign in every way I can! I wholeheartedly believe that Barack will ensure that all Americans will have an equal opportunity to achieve the American Dream.

Jenna in Bainbrige Island, Washington says:

My ultimate goal is a better world for the next generations of disabled kids.  I never imagined I could have that hope for myself, I just knew I didn’t want the next generation as disenfranchised as disabled people are today.
I now have the hope that my goals are also within reach, and like millions of others I have Senator Obama to thank for that.  His attention to disability issues is unprecedented for a presidential candidate.  I’m still awed by it, by the way millions of disabled Americans are being treated as citizens of this country and not just a medical problem to ‘fix.’ We need to stand up and say enough.  Scream it if we have to, and use our collective voices to be the change.

AnneMarie from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania says:

I am supporting Senator Obama, because I know that he will work to ensure that all Americans have access to quality health care, and quality education.  I know that Senator Obama is committed to the fair treatment of every American, and he will fight to ensure that our policies are reflective of those views.  Senator Obama will not make false distinctions between people who have physical disabilities and those with emotional problems or serious mental illness. I support Senator Obama for President of the United States because Senator Obama will ensure that every American can live with dignity despite the nature of his or her particular challenge.

Join Americans with Disability for Obama to connect with others in your community supporting Barack Obama.

Voices for Change: Kathy in Ohio

When Kathy, 49, first heard Barack Obama speak at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, she thought, “I wish he were running for President.”  Four years later, she is fired up and working hard to make this wish a reality in 2008.

For Kathy, it was Senator Obama’s sound judgment on foreign policy that inspired her to get involved and create change in America.

I admired his early stance against the Iraq War.  He has a good worldview.  He really seems to think things through and doesn’t make decisions based on the political climate.

She also saw a connection between the cost of the Iraq War and the struggles that people face in her community.

The war is a concern here, as well as getting jobs back in the area.  I don’t think we can get the economy on track until we figure out the issues with the war.  This goes hand in hand with Obama’s energy plan, which would create new jobs.  My husband’s job is secure at the moment, but a lot of people I know have lost their businesses.  Something has to change for everybody.

A mother of three, Kathy says that everyone in her family is excited about Barack Obama’s candidacy -- including her parents, who will be voting Democratic for the first time ever. Kathy is inspired by the significance that this election holds for her children’s future.

My son Matt is fourteen, and he will stop and listen to anything that comes on about Barack. Before this year, he never really paid attention to politics.  And I’m worried that if McCain gets elected, we risk getting involved in more wars and the need for a draft as a result.

Although Kathy has voted in the past, she was never really energized to get involved.  This time is different, she explains, “What appeals to everybody about Barack Obama is that he is really going to make a change.”  Kathy has turned this hopeful energy into action, making calls and telling her friends and neighbors about Obama’s record and his plans for America.  “I circulate a lot of petitions and ads to try to get the word out.” She’s already been using the online phonebanking tool.  “Everyday I log on, and this week I’m going to try and make the 96 calls I was given.”

If you’d like to join Kathy and the millions of other Americans calling for change, log on to My.barackobama.com to get involved.  Be sure to check out the brand new “Neighbor to Neighbor” canvassing campaign that makes it easy to reach out to voters in your own neighborhood.
