Crossing Over to Support Barack

Barack has said many times that men and women across the county come up to him and tell him, often in hushed voices, that even though they are Republicans, they are voting for him. And this November will be no different.

New York Times best selling author Frank Schaeffer recently wrote an article at the Huffington Post explaining why, as a lifelong Republican, he will be voting for Barack in the General Election:

This is a great day for those of us who have been fighting for Senator Obama! I'm a good example of why he'll win in November. I'm the least typical Obama supporter. And there are many more like me.

I cut my political teeth in the seventies through the early eighties as an organizer in the antiabortion religious right. I'm a fifty-five year old white man who has been a conservative most of my life. I've been a Republican activist who campaigned for McCain in 2000. I'm a big fan of the military. My son served in the Marines. If Obama can reach me he can reach anyone.

...As I see it our choice is between a heroic old man whose time has long past and who will perpetuate failed policy, and a brilliant, openhearted new founding father of the new post-racial, post-divided America the likes of which we have not seen.

...Obama touches me. He has a prophetic authenticity that reminds me of W.E.B. Du Bois' prayers that Du Bois sometimes wrote for his students. Obama also brings a touch of Billy Graham with him to the podium. His is a deeply spiritual call. And his critics that have dismissed Obama's ability to inspire as "mere words" are dead wrong.

We have never needed inspiration more. And we have never needed a president to inspire the rest of the world more. Every international opinion poll shows that Obama is not only the most popular American leader, perhaps ever, but more popular than any other world leader today.

The general election will be a tough fight, but with your support, we can spread Barack's message to all Americans.

Students for Barack Obama: University of
Washington looks back

By Zach Charat, University of Washington Chapter Coordinator

The UW Students for Barack Obama chapter brought the school year to a close with a bang, at our school’s annual free spring concert. The UWFSBO and the UW Young Democrats painted our campus of 40,000 students “Obama” with tables around the HUB Lawn for the big event. Volunteers were wading through the crowd, passing out hundreds of buttons, stickers, and signs; while registering new voters along the way.

It has certainly been an exciting year for us at UWSFBO, a few weeks ago, eager volunteers hopped aboard “Big Red”, the iconic double-decker bus donated by Hale's Ales, to head south to Portland to assist the campaign effort for the May 20th primary. These student volunteers were no strangers to yielding successful primaries, as our 43rd legislative district went 79% for Obama and 20% Clinton in Washington’s February 19th Caucus. The UWSFBO also hosted Senator John Kerry for a town hall meeting with students before our caucus.

We thank the University of Washington students for their hard work and congratulate them on their efforts. If you have stories from your chapter's journey this year please email them to Marc@StudentsforBarackObama.com

Bill Moyers Pwns O'Reilly's "Producer"

This is just absolutely amazing. Bill O'Reilly sent out one of his "producers" to corner Bill Moyers at the National Conference for Media Reform. Boy howdy, did Bill Moyers give him a down-home dressing-down.

More Messages to Hillary: "It has been historic"

All day yesterday and today, we've heard from thousands of people who have shared their thanks and thoughts with Senator Hillary Clinton as this incredible primary draws to a close. We've seen Obama supporters expressing their admiration for Senator Clinton, Clinton supporters declaring their support in the general election for Barack, and people on both sides taking pause to acknowledge the historic nature of this  17 month contest...

Cee from MD…

Thank you so much for your undying love for this country and your attempt to repair America. Thank you so much for paving the way for me, a 20 year old African American young woman, to possibly be the President of the United States. You have run an outstanding campaign. I can say that in doing this you made Barack Obama stronger, as well as the Democratic party.

It has been a long tough fight for us all. Most importantly it has been historic. You and Barack have broken down many doors. Now that we move forward to the general election and John McCain, I expect nothing more than the tough, hard hitting fighter that you have always been.

Catherine from IL

Dear Hillary,
Thank you so much for your outstanding example of what we as women can do if we strive to. Thank you for such a warm, kind, yet powerful endorsement of Barack Obama.

Bri from NH…

I am a former Hillary supporter (still am)… but after watching her today, I was motivated to throw my support to Obama, because we do not need another Republican.

I hope and I pray that people in the Obama camp are warm towards the Hillary supporters, because we were all passionate for her, just like the Obama supporters are for him.

Let’s all please just get along and realize the history in the making.

I LOVE YOU HILLARY and THANK YOU for proving that women can do it too!

Arlene from CA

I extol Senator Clinton. Thank you. I saw all my Hillary supporting friends last night and they all came up to hug me and in unison screamed ‘YES WE CAN!’ Oh happy day!

Sherry in MN…

Thank you for an eloquent endorsement of Senator Obama.

And thank you; as you DID make history, and you DID break a glass ceiling. I don't agree with the idea that it was only cracked.

You're the one who made it a matter of course that a woman can run an effective campaign for President.

Everyone understands the challenges that still lie ahead. Right now, your donations can help bring even more people into this movement. Every donation will be matched by a first time supporter who is joining us now for the hard work ahead.

Time for Everyone to Stop the "Popular Vote"
Argument

Senator Dianne Feinstein, one of Sen. Clinton's closest supporters, kept pushing the false "Clinton won the popular vote" meme today on This Week with George Stephanopoulus:

Sen. Dianne Feinstein reiterated that Clinton had won the popular vote ? an assertion that is not accepted by Illinois Democrat Sen. Barack Obama?s camp and one that, if repeated often, could harm Democratic attempts to unify behind him. ?Hillary Clinton is well known, certainly she had the popular vote in this election.?

As noted in the quote, if this meme keeps getting repeated, it will calcify the justified disappointment and hurt that Clinton supporters are feeling right now and will solidify for them the notion that Hillary was somehow robbed of the nomination.

Unlike in the general election where every state has their citizens cast a ballot for President, the democratic primaries involve both primaries (where each person casts their vote) and caucuses, where people gather in a room, express their support for their candidate and, from such internal voting, delegates for each caucus are apportioned to the state convention. As a result, the popular vote numbers that you see are not apples-to-apples comparisons.

Now add to the mix that Obama was not on the ballot in Michigan (from which state Clinton supporters continue to insist that Obama got zero votes, even though the DNC Rules & Bylaws Committee reached a compromise and apportioned all of "uncommitted" delegates to Obama). In addition, none of the candidates were allowed to campaign for votes in Florida. Further stir into the Michigan and Florida equation the fact that hundreds of thousands of people did not vote because they were told that their vote would not count at the Convention (as reflected in the fact that both states' voter turnout was much lower than expectations) and you get a highly polluted set of data from which to draw "certain" or "unquestionable" conclusions.

Final data point. In Washington, Iowa, Maine and Nevada, these states did not release an official estimate of voter turnout. However, Clinton supporters like Sen. Feinstein are content to completely disregard any tabulation or estimate of the turnout in such states in order to make the damaging argument that Sen. Clinton somehow "won" the popular vote. Are voters' voices in Washington, Iowa, Maine and Nevada not supposed to be heard?

From the above analysis, I hope most of you will agree that the fairest assessment of the popular vote is to give the "uncommitted" Michigan votes to Obama and give both candidates the estimates of voter turnout in Washington, Iowa, Maine and Nevada.

There are only two conclusions to draw:
  1. If you tally up the popular vote in the fairest and even-handed way described above, you'll see from RealClearPolitics that Obama is ahead of Clinton by 61,703 votes.

  2. If you decide to tally up the popular vote in some other skewed and selective manner, the vote tally you come up with is too questionable to be asserted by our nation's respected leaders as unquestionable fact.
Here is where we stand:

Obama is now the presumptive nominee.

Hillary Clinton has suspended her campaign and endorsed Obama with a ringing call for party unity.

In the interest of party unity, as so eloquently expressed by Senator Clinton yesterday, we all need let the whole popular vote argument go. It can only serve to make people angry, prolong the grieving process and hurt the Democrat's chances in the fall against John McCain.
