House Approves the Budget 233-196

The House of Representatives has passed the fiscal year 2010 budget by a vote of 233 to 196

Following the vote, President Obama released the following statement:

“Tonight, the House of Representatives took another step toward rebuilding our struggling economy. This budget resolution embraces our most fundamental priorities: an energy plan that will end our dependence on foreign oil and spur a new clean energy economy; an education system that will ensure our children will be able to compete in the economy of the 21st century; and health care reform that finally confronts the back-breaking costs plaguing families, businesses and government alike. And by making hard choices and challenging the old ways of doing business, we will cut in half the budget deficit we inherited within four years. With this vote comes an obligation to pursue our efforts to go through the budget line-by-line, searching for additional savings. Like the families we serve, we must cut the things we don't need to invest in those we do.”

No Republicans voted for the resolution. The House budget resolution must still be reconciled with a Senate version, which is currently under debate.

House approves $3.5 trillion budget

The House of Representatives approved President Barack Obama's $3.6 trillion federal budget on Thursday with Republican yes votes.

The Senate is also looking like it will pass a partisan and similar $3.5 trillion budget without any Republican support.

?The American people want us to find our common ground where we can, but they did not send us here to split the difference,? House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said. ?They want real change, and we have come here to make a difference.?

The budgets will allow the expiration of Bush-era tax cuts for wealthier Americans but continue those benefiting the middle class.

Budget Debate Resumes in the Senate

From the official Senate schedule for the day:

Convenes: 10:00am

Resume consideration of S. Con. Res. 13, the Concurrent Resolution on the Budget... The "vote-a-rama" is expected to begin around 11:30am. Senators should expect a long series of roll call votes throughout the day and evening. There will be 2 minutes for debate equally divided prior to each vote. Each vote after the first vote will be 10 minutes in duration.

The Senate is expected to vote on Senator John McCain's alternative budget today, as well as a number of proposed amendments. It is in these amendments, and these votes, that a large portion of the budget battle will be fought. Senate GOP leaders have said that they will use the amendment process to try to alter the budget rather than presenting their own, official plan. Yesterday the Senate defeated a proposed Republican amendment that would have enacted a spending freeze on all non-defense discretionary spending in 2010. John McCain's suggested alternative would make deeps cuts in to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, while extending the Bush tax cuts for the rich.

If you haven't already done so, there is still time to call your representatives and let them know that you support the President's budget plan, and ask them to vote against any last minute amendments that would weaken it.
